How to Choose the Right Hair Colour

Most colour regrets don't come from bad technique — they come from choosing a shade for the wrong reasons. Here's the framework I use with every client at our hair colouring service in Lahore.

Step 1: Find your undertone

Look at the veins on your inner wrist in daylight. Blue or purple suggests cool undertones; green suggests warm; a mix means neutral. Gold jewellery flattering you more than silver is another warm-tone clue. South Asian skin is often warm or neutral-olive, which is why golden caramels, chocolate browns and copper tones are so popular — and why ashy, cool blondes can look grey against the skin.

Step 2: Decide how much maintenance you want

• Low maintenance (every 3–4 months): balayage, face-framing "money piece", subtle root-melt.
• Medium (every 6–8 weeks): global colour close to your natural depth, highlights.
• High (every 4 weeks): fashion shades, going dramatically lighter, covering grey with a light colour.

Step 3: Respect your hair's history

Previously coloured, hennaed or keratin-treated hair behaves differently. A strand test isn't optional — it's how we avoid unexpected orange and unnecessary damage.

Step 4: Think about your face, not just the shade

Lighter pieces around the face lift and brighten; depth at the roots adds dimension and makes fine hair look thicker. Colour placement matters as much as colour choice.
